PORT HURON, MI - Port Huron Icehawks right wing Mike Kinnie was named International Hockey League Forward of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 18, the league announced today.
The Icehawks newcomer did not take long to make an impression. He netted the IHL's first hat trick of the season on Saturday in Port Huron's season opener versus the Fort Wayne Komets. He scored two power play goals and one even-strength tally to propel the Icehawks to a 5-4 win over the Komets. The winger also recorded a hat trick in the Icehawks final preseason game versus the ECHL Toledo Walleye.
The 27-year old native of Shelby Township, Michigan currently leads the league in goals and is tied for fifth in points after just one game played.
Muskegon defenseman Matt Krug was named Rookie of the Week and Quad City goaltender Sebastien Laplante received Goaltender of the Week honors.
The Icehawks return to action next weekend with a trio of games. They host the Flint Generals on Friday at 7:30 p.m. There will be a magnet schedule giveaway for the first 500 fans. The Icehawks travel to Flint on Saturday to wrap up the home and home series, then head to Muskegon on Sunday to take on the Lumberjacks.
