Jackson, Tenn. - Alex Young's five-inning start and six total bases from Marty Herum helped the Jackson Generals to a 7-3 victory over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Thursday night at The Ballpark at Jackson. The victory gave the Generals (1-0) their fifth straight win in an Opening Night game, providing new manager Shelley Duncan his first win at the Double-A level.
Young (1-0, 1.80 ERA) relied on good command, throwing 75% of his pitches for strikes in his first start of the year. After giving up a leadoff triple to Jacksonville outfielder Monte Harrison, Young allowed just two other hits to Jacksonville (0-1) in five innings of work. Herum (2-4, R, 2 RBI, BB, HR) made hard contact in two of his five plate appearances, including his first home run of the year in the fifth inning and a double off the centerfield wall.
