Flint Generals News Release
FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals, proud members of the IHL, dropped their second game in as many nights against the Port Huron IceHawks Saturday night at Perani Arena, falling 4-1.
Despite having left Friday night's game in the second after a hard hit, Flint's Tony Tuzzolino started in Saturday's matchup and was one of Flint's strongest players throughout the game, creating chances and simply playing hard. The Generals got off to a quick start, with a goal just 4:12 into the first. Tuzzolino passed the puck from corner left of the goalie to an open Jamie Schaafsma who found the back of the net. Burke Henry also got an assist on the play.
Lingering frustration from the night before was evident when Derek Parker and Port Huron's Mike Bray dropped the gloves at center ice just two seconds after Flint's goal. The Generals came close to taking a 2-0 when Pascal Rheaume intercepted an attempt to clear the zone and was alone in front, but his shot just went wide to the right of IceHawk netminder Larry Sterling.
The second started with Flint up 1-0 but Port Huron dominated, starting with a Kevin Hanson goal early, lighting the lamp just 2:16 into the middle period, getting the puck from Mickael Bedard. There was more action just over a minute later, when Derek Patrosso and Jozeg Wagnehoffer dropped the gloves after the whistle. Each was assessed five minutes for fighting, the fifth fighting major for each team in two games.
Port Huron took a 2-1 lead at the 11:15 mark with a score from Patrosso. Nick Rolls and Cory Stillman got the assists, the first of two assists for Stillman in the period. Kris Vernarksy added his name to the IceHawks goal list for the second night in a row scoring at the 15:14 mark putting the score at 3-1. Cory Stillman got his second assist of the second on the play; Mike Kinnie also got an assist.
Flint's frustrations showed with the third fighting major of the game when Tyler Willis and Patrosso mixed it up at the half way mark; Craig Cescon was also in the action, getting a two minute minor for roughing. Unfortunately for the Generals, the Port Huron scoring did not end with the second intermission. The Hawks scored their fourth of the night at 13:03 with a power play goal from Mike Kinnie. Kris Vernarksy got his second point of the night with an assist; Tab Lardner got the second assist.
Rob Nolan stopped 33 of 37 shots through three periods.
The Generals head to Dayton tomorrow to take on the Gems in an afternoon matchup, the first between these two hockey clubs.
