Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, Ill. (October 24, 2009) - The Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, tonight fell to the Fort Wayne Komets 3-1 in the Mallards' inaugural IHL home opener as Fort Wayne's Matt Syroczynski scored a pair of second period goals and Komet goaltender Tim Haun made 28 saves.
Syroczynski scored what proved to be the game winner when he buried a Colin Chaulk centering pass to snap a 1-1 tie just 27 seconds into the second period. Syroczynski struck again- this time with a tip in- to provide Fort Wayne with some insurance at 16:27 of the second.
After Mike Zbriger snapped home a power play goal from the right wing circle to open the scoring at 12:58 of the first period and the Mallards carried the 1-0 lead into the latter stages of the first, it seemed Quad City would go into the intermission on top- but intsead the Komets struck for the tying with just 10.7 seconds left in the period when Travis Whitehead redirected Guy Dupuis's shot into the back of the net.
The Mallards' Patrick Levesque hit the post in the third period and the Flock pressured after pulling goaltender Sebastien Laplante (31 saves) with 1:40 remaining, but Quad City was unable to narrow the deficit in the third.
The Mallards will complete their Opening Week in the Quad Cities when they return to the i wireless Center ice for the second time in seven days to battle Flint at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, October 30, an evening that will also feature the World's Largest Indoor Trick-or-Treat and, for the first 1,000 fans through the doors, the Genesis Official Game Puck Giveaway.
