Generals Kick Off Halloween Weekend With Big Win Over Quad City
October 30, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Flint Generals News Release
FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals, proud members of the IHL, win their first game since winning their season opener back on October 16th vs. the Muskegon Lumberjacks at Perani Arena.
The Generals got off to a good start with an unassisted goal by veteran Tyler Willis 2:30 into play. After their early goal Flint kept sustained pressure in the Mallards end, something the team has struggled with many times this season. Being able to keep the heat on Quad City, allowed the Gens to take their first 2-0 lead over an opponent this season off of a goal from Lucas Schott at 6:46. Quad City cut the Gens lead in half when a puck made it past JF Labbe at 15:33.
Things were relatively quiet during the second period. There were only a total of 17 shots on goal between the two benches but Quad City was able to even things up with a quick score from the left of JF Labbe off the twig of Brandon Morino at 5:31. Obi Aduba and Joel Gasper were credited with the assists. With the Generals looking a bit lackadaisical, the Mallards generated some quality chances.
Looking for two desperately needed points, Flint came out in the third with a lot of energy. At 2:06 Burke Henry came in late on the rush and cashed in getting his first goal of the season and what turned out to be the game winner. The minutes immediately following the goal that put the Gens in the lead proved vital for the boys in blue and gold as the Mallards really turned up the heat getting a few quality chances, chances that could have easily put Quad ahead.
The biggest scuffle of the game came at 9:11 of the opening period with a center ice rematch between Flint's Derek Parker and Quad City's Jason Goulet. Goulet caught Parker off guard with a jab to the jaw after grabbing Parkers jersey sleeve, though Goulet got the better of him this round Parker got in a few digs of his own before both were sent to the sin bin with fifteen minutes of penalties each.
Labbe made 20 saves on 22 shots in 60:00 minutes of play. Getting 31 shots on goal, 16 in the first period, the Gens outshot their opponent for the first time this season.
The win moves the Generals record to 2-4-0-0. Flint heads to Bloomington, IN tomorrow for their first meeting of the season with the PrairieThunder who improved to 3-2-0-1 after a big 5-4 victory over Fort Wayne.
Flint heads back to Perani Arena November 6th when they host the reigning two time Turner Cup Champion Fort Wayne Komets. Aiming for a sellout crowd, the Generals staff is in competition with the arena staff to see which office can sell the most group tickets for the game. A special group rate is being offered to help this competition, just $5 a ticket for groups of 10 or more as long as tickets are purchased by November 5th.
