TODAY'S GAME: The Generals look to win the series today in the middle game of the 3-game series with the M-Braves. Jackson is currently on a 6-game, 2-city road trip in Mississippi (1-0) and Montgomery. The Generals lead the season series with the M-Braves, 4-2.
GENERALS RECAP: The Generals picked up their 50th win of the season on Independence Day at Trustmark Park, 4-2. LH Anthony Fernandez outdueled 4-time NL All-Star Ben Sheets and earned his 3rd win in three starts for Jackson. The Generals got to Sheets early Wednesday by scoring 4 runs in the first 2 innings. 2B Stefen Romero picked up an RBI triple followed by a RF Kalian Sams RBI single giving Jackson a 2-0 after the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, Romero struck again with a two out 2-run double off the center field wall plating 1B Chris Pettit and 3B Leury Bonilla. Fernandez followed back-to-back complete games with 7.0 innings on Wednesday, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, striking out 4 and walking just 1. Sheets, making his first pro start since July 19, 2009, allowed 4 runs on 5 hits over 5.0 innings pitched, striking out 6 and walking 1. Sheets retired the final 10 batters faced. RH Carter Capps earned his 14th save of the season with 1.1 scoreless innings. It was the 9th time Capps has gone more than 1 inning for the save. Romero was 2-for-4 offensively for the Generals with a double, triple and 3 RBI. Pettit was 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 runs scored.
CAPPING OFF GAMES: RH Carter Capps (pictured right, AP Photo) has not allowed an earned run in his last 28.0 innings in relief (21 games), dating back to April 29th. This season he is 2-2 with 14 saves and a 1.11 ERA (5 ER, 40.2 IP). He has limited opponents to a .193 (29x150) average, while walking 10 and striking out 60. His current scoreless inning streak stands at 10.0 innings (dating back to 6/8). Capps has held opponents scoreless in 27 of 30 relief appearances this season. He has gone more than 1.0 inning 9 of his 14 saves this season.
K-PAX IS BACK: After missing more than a month with a knee injury LHP James Paxton returned from the DL Tuesday after missing more than a month with a knee injury, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings. Paxton ranks as the 4th best prospect in the Mariners organization, according to Baseball America. He ranks as the 8th best left-handed pitching prospect and 77th overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com.
FERNANDEZ MANIA: Last night's starter LH Anthony Fernandez became the first Jackson pitcher in franchise history to post back-to-back 9-inning complete games in his first 2 starts. Fernandez has allowed just 3 ER in 25.0 IP in his first 3 starts in Double-A, including a 2-hit, complete game shutout on June 28th at Pensacola. Fernandez is 3-0, with a 1.08 ERA.
TOPS IN THE LEAGUE: The Generals 50-34 record is the best in the Southern League. Also, Jackson ranks first in pitching, with a 3.09 ERA. The Generals lead the league with 62 home runs and rank 2nd in the league with 91 stolen bases.
VIVA LA ROMERO: After a 2-for-4 night last night, INF Stefen Romero has hit safely 11 of 12 games with 7 multi-hit games with Jackson since his promotion. During this stretch he is batting .409 (18x44) with 8 runs scored, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 16 RBI.
WHO'S HOT?: LH Mauricio Robles allowed unearned run to score in his last appearance, but has not allowed an earned run in 16.0 consecutive innings (since 5/30). During this 11 game stretch in relief he has limited opponents to a .077 (4x52) average, while walking 8 and striking out 18. Overall in 17 games with Jackson, Robles is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA (7 ER, 25.2 IP).
-> RH Taylor Stanton has not allowed a run in his last 2 outings including Sunday's start against Montgomery. Over 9.0 innings pitched, Stanton is 2-0, with a 0.00 ERA, with 3 strikeouts.
