Generals Face Tough Divisional Test On May 2nd

April 30, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
El Paso Generals News Release

EL PASO, TX: The El Paso Generals (3-1) are coming off a dominating 68-16 win over the Corpus Christi Hammerheads (1-3) back on April 25. The Generals, offensively and defensively, played well in the victory over the Hammerheads. QB Tommy Jones led the offense by completing 18 passes for a season-high 274 yards and seven touchdowns. WR DeAngelo Woodie led all El Paso receivers with a season-high 138 yards and four touchdowns.

The Generals defense gave the Hammerheads offense trouble throughout the game and held the Hammerheads scoreless in the fourth quarter. The defense was led by DL Ron Ellington who sacked Hammerheads QB Ty Sellers five times in the ball game. Riding a two-game winning streak, the Generals will now turn their attention to the San Angelo Stampede Express who lost the top spot in the Lone Star Division after a 59-20 loss to the Abilene Ruff Riders last week. Despite the loss, San Angelo remains a dangerous opponent for El Paso and the Generals will have to play as tough this week as they did against Corpus on April 25.

Look for the pass happy Generals to test the San Angelo defense early with QB Tommy Jones and wide outs DeAngelo Woodie & Lemans Caismier. The San Angelo defense will have to play press coverage on the wide outs and pressure Tommy Jones in order to contain the Generals high-ranked offense. San Angelo is giving up close to 54 points a game so expect the Generals to take advantage of their vulnerable secondary.

LB Trae Ivory, DL Jonathan Hamm and DL Clay Harrell will try to provide pressure to disrupt Tommy Jones and slow down the Generals passing attack. Look for the Express to get their rushing attack back on track with RB Brannon Hatley. Hatley leads San Angelo with 113 yards rushing and two touchdowns. An even bigger question for San Angelo will be at the quarterback position with ether Trevor Scharer and Damion Carter. Carter has been very consistent throwing the football since replacing Scharer earlier in the season.

The Generals defensive line will be led up front by Ron Ellington who leads the club with 8.5 sacks. The secondary will contend with San Angelo WR Tarvares Williams who will need to bounce back after a season-low 14 yards receiving against Abilene last week. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. from the San Angelo Coliseum and next week the Generals will return home to face the Abilene Ruff Riders in a possible first place showdown in the division on Saturday, May 9.
