Abilene Ruff Riders News Release
ABILENE, TX: The Abilene Ruff Riders (3-1) are coming off their most dominating performance of the season defeating the San Angelo Stampede Express (1-3) 59-20 on Saturday, April 25. The Ruff Riders led 25-13 at halftime and never looked back. Abilene's defense did not allow an offensive touchdown from San Angelo during the second half. The offense exploded for 21 unanswered points in the third quarter with Quincy Carter finishing the game with a season-high eight touchdown passes. WR Fred Howze led Abilene with 105 receiving yards and a season-high four touchdown receptions. The Ruff Riders are now riding a two-game winning streak and are tied atop the Lone Star Division with the El Paso Generals at 3-1 overall and 3-0 in division play.
Abilene turns their focus this weekend outside the Lone Star Division towards the Wichita Wild on Saturday, May 2. The Wild are coming off a 30-28 loss to the Sioux City Bandits. Wichita trailed at halftime, 20-7, but outscored the Bandits by 11 in the second half.
QB Quincy Carter will look to establish the passing game with wide outs Mike Carrillo, Fred Howze and Jerale Badon. The Wild defense is holding opponents to 42 points a game so look for DL Justin Montgomery and LB Lamont Reid to give the Ruff Riders offense problems throughout the course of the game. Reid leads the Wild with 33 total tackles while Montgomery leads the club with 2.5 sacks.
Look for Wichita to establish the running game with RB Darius Fudge who comes into this weekend leading the Wild with 294 yards rushing and six touchdowns. Tim Riley and Carlos Canvanagh are solid wide outs, and they will be important weapons for QB Alex Melugin to throw to in the ball game. Last week, Melugin went 14 of 24 for 133 yards passing and two touchdowns against Sioux City. However, the Abilene defense is playing as good as any team in the IFL right now and they hold the past two Defensive Player of the Week selections in LB Rico Brooks and DB Joey Longoria. Brooks leads the team in tackles with 32 and leads the IFL in averaging eight tackles a game.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Hartman Arena in Park City, Kansas. The Ruff Riders remain on the road next week to take on Lone Star Divisional opponent El Paso in what could be a first place showdown in the division.
