Generals Defeat IceHawks 5-2, Keep Playoff Dreams Alive

FLINT, MI - Rookie Matt Moffat's two goals 13 seconds apart in the 2nd period propelled the Flint Generals to a 5-2 victory over the Port Huron IceHawks before 1,689 fans at Perani Arena tonight.

The Generals opened the scoring on the first shift of the game when Bryan Smolinski scored his 22nd goal of the season 23 seconds into the game from the goal mouth on a feed from Jamie Schaafsma. Chris Bogas picked up the 2nd assist on the goal. Flint outshot Port Huron 16-8 in the first frame, but was only able to score the one goal on IceHawks goaltender Larry Sterling. The Generals stretched the lead to 2-0 when Pascal Rheaume scored his 20th goal of the season 4:17 into the second period. Matt Moffat scored his first of two goals at the 6:06 mark, which proved to be the game winner, and then followed it up with his second at 6:19 to stretch the Generals lead to 4-0. Moffat's goals were his 12th and 13th of the season. The IceHawks countered with a goal of their own before the end of the period when Derek Patrosso lit the lamp for his 30th of the season, and despite being outshot 10-7 in the period, the Generals lead 4-1 after two period. Port Huron came out strong in the 3rd period, and were rewarded with their pressure when Peter Flache scored his 9th of the season at the 4:55 mark. Generals goaltender Rob Nolan shut the door the rest of the way, picking up his 19th victory of the season, and Bryan Smolinski scored his second of the night, and 23rd of the season, into an empty net with 20 seconds left to seal the victory.

The victory, coupled with Bloomington's 6-4 loss to Muskegon has cut the Bloomington lead for the 4th and final playoff spot to 5 points. The Generals hold a game in hand with 5 games remaining, and the two teams face each other in a pivotal game next Friday night at Perani Arena.

The Generals play tomorrow night in Muskegon where they take on the league leading Lumberjacks at 7pm. Their next home game will be this Sunday afternoon when they play the back end of their home and home with Muskegon at 4:00pm at Perani Arena as they continue in their quest to qualify for the playoffs. The Generals will be hosting a ‘Skate with the Team' immediately following the game, so fans are encouraged to bring their skates and take a few laps with their favorite Generals player!
