Generals Dealt Tough 3-1 Loss In Dayton

November 22, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) - Flint Generals News Release

FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals and the Dayton Gems played for the fifth time this season on Sunday afternoon at Hara Arena and it was the Gems that walked away with a 3-1 win.

Dayton came out in the first period firing pucks from every which way on rookie goaltender Rob Nolan but he stopped all 15 shots. With less than four minutes played in the game, the Generals received a four minute power play when Tim Hartung got his stick in the face of John Ronan, who left the ice to get stitches.

Both teams came out strong in the middle period but Dayton struck first with an early goal from John Ornelas; Nathan Oke and Mike Vaskivuo were credited of the assists. The Generals increased pressure, creating traffic in front of Ryan Mior. After banging away at the puck a few times, it squirted out away from the net finding the stick of John Mori who took the shot putting the puck between the pads of Mior tying the game at 9:23. Craig Cescon and Nate Ward assisted on the play.

Tim Hartung put the Gems up 2-1 when he did a wraparound, put the puck through his legs and flipped it over Nolan. Flint kept playing hard but could not put the puck in the net. The task of tying the game became even more difficult when Flint received a late penalty and Matt Affrey took advantage.

The Generals resume play on Wednesday for $1 Draft Night and Coats for Kids as they welcome the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Thursday they head to Fort Wayne for a Thanksgiving game against the Komets. Then on Friday they will face the Dayton Gems for a sixth time this season. Sunday will see the return of the Generals to Perani when the Lumberjacks return.
