Greensboro Generals News Release
GREENSBOROâThe word rivalry defines the on-ice battles that take place between the Greensboro Generals and the Roanoke Express. An 8-6 win over the Express gave Greensboro an early advantage in the season series, as the Generals had an offensive outburst, which sent the 3,589 in attendance roaring to their feet.
The Express (9-6-0) registered the first goal just 4:33 into the game, when Duncan Dalmao converted a power-play conversion, where they lead 1-0. Greensboro retaliated with two consecutive goals of their own, as Eric Fortier sent home a power-play shot off a face off, knotting the game at 1-1. The Generals leading goal scorer, Sam Ftorek, slapped a hard wrister past Roanoke netminder Jason Wolfe, to send the teams to intermission with a Generals 2-1 lead.
In the second period, Greensboro found a rhythm that helped set the stage for an offensive explosion. Following consecutive goals opening play by Roanoke's David Silverstone and Andrew McPherson, which gave the Express a 3-2 lead at the 7:33 mark of the period, Greensboro's offense kicked into overdrive. A power-play goal by Joel Irwin, following feed from Matt Turek and Geno Parrish, tied the game at 3-3. Just under 20 seconds later Turek scored his first of two goals, when on a power play he caught a rebound from the shooting Parrish, for a wrap around goal that would give Greensboro a 4-3 advantage. Turek found himself open for another goal at the 17:50 mark to give Greensboro a 5-3 lead, and following the Express' Rick Kowalsky registering a goal with under a minute remaining in the period, where Greensboro would lead 5-4 at period's end.
Joel Irwin opened third period scoring, working his magic for a second goal of the evening. The Generals Sam Ftorek giving him a team-high ninth goal on the season, rifling a shot past the outstretched Wolfe. Greensboro got its eighth and final goal off the stick of Mike Bayrack, who also registered an assist, to earn their 10th victory of the season. The Express would close out scoring with a power-play goal by Rick Kowalsky, and a final breakaway goal when David Silverstone scored with just under a minute remaining.
"I think that playing even one man short tonight (Erik Wendell), our defensive play was tremendous. True we gave up six goals, but I think that our power-play was once again solid tonight. Individually, Joel Irwin had his best game of the year. I thought that the whole team was really solid, most important Daniel Berthiaume who had six goals against him. No matter what the score is, I was proud of our play, our team, and we have to maintain this same energy," Head Coach Rick Adduono said of his team's performance.
Greensboro will play its third game of the five game homestand when the Generals return on Sunday, for a 7:30 game against the South Carolina Stingrays. The first 1000 kids in attendance will receive a free Hanes Tagless-T and autograph pen, for an autograph session following the game.
