Mississippi Braves News Release
Jackson, TN - The Jackson Generals steadily came back from a 3-0 deficit to down the Mississippi Braves 4-3 on Thursday night from Pringles Park.
Kalian Sams hit a pinch-hit triple to lead off the eighth inning off of reliever Chris Jones, and he scored on Rich Poythress' RBI single to give the Generals (13-8; 55-36) a 4-3 lead from which the M-Braves (8-13; 38-53) never recovered. It was the second RBI for Poythress on the night.
David Hale pitched five swell innings, allowing just a run on four hits while striking out six. He left with a 3-1 lead, but the Generals posted a single run in four different frames on the night to chip away and eventually win.
Mississippi scored three times in the third inning to build their lead. Todd Cunningham led off with a triple off of Generals starter Forrest Snow. Keenan Wiley's bloop single to left scored Cunningham from third to give the Braves a lead. After Snow retired Joey Terdoslavich and Jordan Parraz for the first two outs, Joe Leonard got a middle-in fastball that he sent sailing over the left field wall, putting the Braves ahead 3-0. It was his sixth home run of the season and his second this week.
Snow finished the night with three runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out 3 and walked one, taking a no-decision.
The Generals started their comeback in the fourth inning. Joe Dunigan hit a one-out double off of Hale and moved to third on a Christian Bethancourt throwing error trying to pick him off of second. Poythress then drove in the first of his runs on a sacrifice fly to right to put the Generals on the board, 3-1.
In the sixth, a leadoff walk by new Brave Cole McCurry put Chris Pettit on. A batter later, Denny Almonte doubled to right center to make it a 3-2 game.
The Generals completed the comeback in the seventh, scoring a run off of Andy Russell without the benefit of a hit. Jesus Sucre walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a bunt fielder's choice by Leury Bonilla. The two runners advanced on a balk, and Sucre scored the tying run when Gabriel Noriega grounded out to second.
Yoervis Medina earned the win in relief for Jackson, his second. Chris Jones suffered the loss, his third. Carter Capps picked up his 16th save of the season in pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
