Klamath Falls Gems News Release

KLAMATH FALLS, OR - Gems starting pitcher Steven Schoonover (Yakima Valley) had the longest outing of the year for Klamath Falls, going 8 2/3 innings in leading the team to a 3-1 victory over the Kitsap BlueJackets.

Schoonover nearly finished the game, giving up three hits and a run in the 9th inning before Mitch Mertens (UC Irvine) came in to close the game for the Gems. Schoonover scattered three other hits and struck out five BlueJackets before being relieved.

Gems RF Kainoa Crowell (Ohlone JC) singled with two out in the third, moving to second on a Nick Miller (Nebraska) walk. DH Albert Selanders (Central Missouri) then doubled to left, scoring both runners to give the Gems a lead they would not relinquish.

Four Gems had two hits each, leading the 12-hit attack that gave the team the win before 884 fans at Kiger Stadium. The Gems have moved to within 2 ½ games of first place in the WCL West in the last two nights.

The two teams finish the three-game series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Kiger Stadium.
