Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Bellingham: June 22, 2011: Tonight was a game of firsts for the Cowlitz Black Bears. The team took the field for the conclusion of their first six-game road trip. Stewart Fewel (LCC) went to the mound trying to rebound from his previous start - a rocky outing against Wenatchee.
Fewel made those struggles a distant memory by pitching the first complete game of the season. He allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out seven. His effort came at a crucial time for the team, after back-to-back extra-inning contests and the end of a long road trip.
Kyle Garlick (University of Oregon) earned a first for the team at the plate, knocking the first home run of the summer over the right field fence in the 8th inning. Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark St.) rebounded from some recent offensive struggles by going one-for-two with a double, two walks, and a stolen base.
The win moves Cowlitz to 6-9 in West Coast League action and the club stands 4.5 games behind division leader Kitsap.
The team now returns home for six games. First up is a three game set Thursday through Saturday against Kelowna. Thursday means another Thirsty Thursday with $2 beer all night long. Also, the first 400 fans 14 and under will receive a baseball with the Bears' logo courtesy of Longview Fibre. It will also be College Night, where any fan with a college ID or wearing a college t-shirt or sweatshirt can get a $2 discount off a general admission ticket.
