KLAMATH FALLS, Ore - The Klamath Falls Gems rumbled back to Kiger Stadium from a six-game road trip on Friday night, beating the Cowlitz Back Bears 6-4. The Gems had their second highest attendance on the year, with 1,582 at Kiger.
In the third inning the Gems came alive. Shortstop Graham Saiko (Oklahoma State) led off with a single to left center. OF Kainoa Crowell (Ohlone JC) then walked and the next batter, 1B Nick Miller (Nebraska) walked behind him to load the bases. The Gems' next hitter, Turner Gill (Portland), singled to score Saiko, and Tom D'Aboy (Gonzaga) followed up with the second RBI single in a row. The Gems would never relinquish the lead.
Gems starting pitcher Bryan Clough (UC Irvine) pitched a solid five innings, giving up three runs, for his first win of the year. The lefty struck out five Black Bears and walked four batters, before handing the ball over to righty Jeremy Burright in the top of the sixth inning. Burright threw three innings, striking out two and only giving up three hits. Matt Klein (Oklahoma State) faced two batters and recorded the last out to received the save, his first of the year. Porter Clayton (Oregon) took the loss for Cowlitz.
Tomorrows night's game will be the middle game of the three game series with Cowlitz. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
