Black Bears Lose in Klamath Falls
July 16, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Klamath Falls: The Cowlitz Black Bears' starting pitching couldn't get to the sixth inning for the second consecutive night while allowing at least four runs. The offense compounded the pitching problems by leaving 12 runners on base as the Klamath Falls Gems prevented Cowlitz from getting clutch hits.
The Black Bears had hits or base runners in all but one inning but could only manage four runs, and three of those came in a fifth-inning rally to cut the Gems' lead to 4-3. Kyle Garlick (University of Oregon) had a two-run double in the frame, and Braxton Miller added a sac fly that scored Greg Velazquez (Cal St. Fullerton).
Richi Sandoval (New Mexico Highland) gave up two runs in his first inning of relief to make the score 6-3, but threw two scoreless innings afterward to set the stage for a Black Bear comeback. The team rallied with two out to load the bases. Cowlitz got one back to cut the lead to two, but could get no more as the Gems took the series opener.
The Black Bears return to Story Field starting July 19th against the Kitsap Blue Jackets. It will be Azteca $2 Tuesday with general admissions tickets, hot dogs, soda, and beer all just two dollars, along with Kelso Schools Spirit Night. Following that will be Burgerville Family Night on Wednesday and Thirsty Thursday on Thursday.
