LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators (8-30) in the middle of a 19-game losing streak and taking to the ice to take on the best team in the league, the Mississippi Surge (21-11). The streak began when the Surge defeated the IceGators on December 9 and the streak ended when the IceGators defeated the Surge 5-4.
The first period with a each team putting pressure on the others goalie. In fact the 'Gators were the first to strike. With 11:00 to go in the period Rusty Masters (MIS) was called for hooking. On the first shot of the ensuing power play, Beau McLaughlin (LOU) scored and put the 'Gators up 1-0. Three minutes later Marc Rechlicz, one of the newest IceGators, scored his first goal of the season. The Surge quickly responded when Masters scored 12 seconds after Rechlicz's goal and cut the 'Gators lead in half. Mississippi added a second goal with about five minutes left in the game when Ryan McCarthy scored his fifth goal of the season.
The second period was full of penalties. During the period each team had 11 penalty minutes. The Surge took the lead in the period with 13:47 remaining, when Nick Klaren scored his second goal of the game. With the 'Gators trailing 3-2, Jeff Bieber (LOU) scored with assistance from Cameron Sault (LOU) and McLaughlin.
The third period began with a 3-3 tie. Louisiana quickly struck when Jason Hill (LOU) scored his third goal of the season and put the 'Gators up 4-3. About ten minutes later, McLaughlin scored his second goal of the game and scored a much-needed insurance goal. With the Surge trailing 5-3 they pulled their goalie in the final minutes giving them a man advantage. With an extra man the Surge cut the 'Gators lead in half when Jeff Grant scored with 41 seconds left in the game. The 'Gators' goalie, Scott Darling, was able to save the next two shot attempts by the Surge's Matt Zultek and sealed the IceGators' victory 5-4.
"I am so proud of our guys," answered an elated IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski after ending the 19-game losing streak. "These guys have worked hard and never gave up."
