RiverHawks Fall to Ice Bears

January 21, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

The Augusta RiverHawks played well enough to win for 41 minutes Friday night at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Unfortunately they allowed four goals in the final 19 minutes of the game, as they fell to the Ice Bears 7-3.

The Ice Bears got two goals from Frank Furdero in the final frame, along with one from Eric Slais and another from Chris Bratina in the third-period explosion. Ice Bears' goaltender Brian Hince was able to stop 10 of 11 during his team's outburst to preserve the victory.

The Ice Bears opened the scoring with a goal just a minute and five seconds into the game from Mark Van Vliet. However, RiverHawks' captain Matt Auffrey charged back with a goal just ten seconds later to tie the game.

The RiverHawks took the lead for a brief period of time early in the second stanza on a short-handed goal from Lucas Labelle. It did not last long as the Ice Bears would get back to back goals from Slais and Emery Olauson to regain the lead.

The third period actually started off positively for the RiverHawks as Neil Graham would score on the power play just under a minute in. That would be all of the celebrating the RiverHawks would do on the night, as Furdero would score his first of two just over three minutes later to get the roll started for the Ice Bears.

The game's outcome moves the two teams into a three-way tie for fourth place in the Southern Professional Hockey League along with the Columbus Cottonmouths. The RiverHawks have the slight disadvantage of having played one more game than the other two teams. However, they remain four points ahead of the Fayetteville FireAntz for the sixth and final playoff seed, and they hold a game in-hand on the team from North Carolina.

The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Friday, February 4th as they face the Columbus Cottonmouths. The puck drops at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at the James Brown Arena Box Office, by calling 1-877-4AUGTIX, or by visiting www.georgialinatix.com.
