Louisiana IceGators News Release

LAFAYETTE, LA -The Louisiana IceGators went into Biloxi and defeated the Mississippi Surge last weekend in overtime in a high scoring 6-5 game. Tonight the Surge kept the high scoring streak going defeating the IceGators 7-3.

The Surge opened a physical first period with a Jeff Grant (MIS) goal 33 seconds into the game. Less than two minutes later Shawn McNeil (LOU) scored his third goal of the season. Then Jason Cassells, of the Surge, scored the go ahead goal with 5:47 left in the period. The first period was marred with penalties. The Surge clocked 24 penalty minutes and the ‘Gators had 9. Things didn't get real heated until 2:23 remaining in the period when Nick Klaren of the Surge was penalized for deliberate injury and expelled from the match. Following the Klaren penalty, Ryan McCarthy (MIS) and Dennis Sicard (LOU) were both given major penalties for fighting and Donald Melnyk (LOU) was given a minor for roughing.

The second period began differently than the first period. The ‘Gators were able to score first on a Nick Vandenbeld goal with an assist to Mike Silletto. With 12 seconds left in the period Jeff Bieber was called for a costly period because with one second left, in the period, Rusty Masters (MIS) scored a power play goal to give the Surge the 3-2 lead going into the third period.

The third period began much like the first for the Surge. Matt Larke (MIS) scored 57 seconds into the period and gave the Surge a two-goal lead. Melnyk scored for the ‘Gators cutting the lead in half but that would not last for long. Jeff Grant scored with 8:33 remaining for the Surge and Masters and Larke added goals with less than a minute remaining in the game. These goals allowed the Surge to win 7-3.

"This was a tough game," replied ‘Gator Head Coach Dave MacIsaac. "We lost focus at different times tonight and good teams will capitalize on your mistakes. That is what they [Surge] did."

Don't miss a moment of the action as the ‘Gators return home to the dome. For ticket information call (337) 704-4423. ‘Gators drop the puck in the dome on Saturday, November 13 against Fayetteville.
