Augusta RiverHawks News Release
A late charge by the Augusta RiverHawks was not enough Saturday night at the James Brown Arena as the Fayetteville FireAntz edged out the RiverHawks 3-2. FireAntz' goaltender Adam Avramenko was the star for the game making 25 saves including a flurry of stops in the final minute of play as the RiverHawks surged.
The loss caps off a successful week for the RiverHawks in which they won games the previous two nights. Despite the loss the RiverHawks remained in a tie for second place in the Southern Professional Hockey League.
The FireAntz' big line of Rob Sich, Chris Leveille, and Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn got the scoring started in the first line. Leveille won a faceoff in the RiverHawks' zone cleanly, straight back to Sich. The always-dangerous Sich fired a quick snap shot past RiverHawks' goaltender Jordan McLaughlin.
The RiverHawks turned up the pressure in the second period, firing 15 shots at FireAntz goaltender Adam Avramenko. However, it was the FireAntz who managed to expand upon their lead. Just over four minutes into the period Ryan Salvis took a pass from Cody Zubko and beat McLaughlin for a two-goal lead.
Later in the second period Myles Gomes snuck in from the blue line and took a nice feed from Jeffery Burrows and hammered a one-timer in.
The RiverHawks made things interesting in the third period when Garrett Peters' slap shot found its way through a screen and past Avramenko.
Then with less than two minutes left in the game Brett Dickinson sprinted into the FireAntz zone and fired a backhand that banked off of Avramenko's shoulder and into the net to make it a one-goal game.
The RiverHawks continued to press through the end of the game, but were unable to solve the FireAntz' net-minder as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Friday, November 19th, against the Columbus Cottonmouths. All RiverHawks' home games start at 7:30pm.
