Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators (16-38) continued their road trip on Saturday night traveling to Pensacola to take on the Ice Flyers (27-26). The IceGators were looking to continue the winning ways against one of the five teams that have already locked up their spot in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) playoffs.
The first period began with each team trying to feel each other out. The IceGators struck first with 3:18 left in the period. Jeff Bieber (LOU) scored with assistance from C.J. Tozzo (LOU). With one second left in the period Dan Ehrman (PEN) scored his 7th goal of the season.
The second period began with the IceGators and Ice Flyers tied at 1-1. Pensacola went on the offensive early in the period getting four of the first five shots on goal. But once again the IceGators would strike first. Tobias Karlsson (LOU) scored his 5th goal of the season with 16:01 left in the second period. Less than three minutes later Kyle Dorowicz (PEN) scored and tied the game at 2-2. Pensacola took their first lead of the game with 7:56 left in the period on a Dan Buccella goal. With the âGators trailing 3-2, Paul D'Agostino (LOU) tied the game with assistance from Shawn McNeil (LOU). Fifteen seconds later McNeil scored with help from D'Agostino.
The âGators opened the third period with a 4-3 lead. Pensacola began the period with the first 11 shots on goal. With 12:21 remaining in the game, Buccella scored his second goal of the game and knotted the game at 4-4. Pensacola then had six consecutive shots on goal beginning at the 10:11 mark. Louisiana added a flurry of shots in the final minute but was unable to score and the game went to overtime.
Each team was very methodical and deliberate in the overtime period. Pensacola had the first shot on goal in the period with 3:18 remaining. Louisiana then followed up with their only shot of the overtime period 30 seconds later. In the final minute of the period, Pensacola had the final three shots on goal. Neither team was able to score so the game went to a shootout. Pensacola and Louisiana were scoreless in the shootout until the third round. Kyle Dorowicz (PEN) scored to put Pensacola up 1-0. Jason Hill (LOU) followed with a goal and tied the shootout 1-1. Matt Whitehead was the fourth shooter for the Ice Flyers and he was able to capitalize and put Pensacola up 2-1 going into the final round. Tozzo was the final attempt in the shootout for the IceGators but he was unable to score and the âGators fell 5-4 in a shootout.
"We played really well," replied IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski after falling in a shootout to the Ice Flyers. "We had our chances to win but just came up just a little short."
The âGators will travel to Mississippi on March 25th and then to Columbus on Saturday, March 26 for the final two games of the 2010-11 season. Do not miss a moment of the action. Get your season tickets for next season now by calling (337) 704-4423.
