RiverHawks Win Ninth Win in a Row
March 19, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks used a four-assist night from Captain Matt Auffrey and a three-point game from Travis Dunstall to defeat the Huntsville Havoc 4-3 Saturday night at the James Brown Arena. The win was the RiverHawks' ninth in a row, breaking their own mark for the highest winning streak in the SPHL this season.
The win puts the RiverHawks just four points back of the first-place Mississippi Surge in the race for the regular season title. The RiverHawks own a game in-hand on the Surge, and have three games left on their inaugural schedule.
The Havoc jumped out to an early lead when newly acquired Timor Varga fired a shot past RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis.
The lead only lasted a few minutes as the RiverHawks were able to even the score. Auffrey had his initial shot stopped, but line-mate Branden Kosolofsky found the rebound and put it in.
The RiverHawks' big line were at it again in the last five minutes of the period as Auffrey threaded a nifty pass to Travis Dunstall who made the deke to the backhand and put it through Havoc goaltender Dan McWhinney's legs.
The RiverHawks were able to extend their lead in the second period. Dunstall and Auffrey teamed up once again, this time with help from defenseman Drew Baker, as Dunstall finished the job with a snapshot to the top shelf over McWhinney's shoulder.
The Havoc narrowed the lead to just a goal in the third period as Ryan Kretzer forced a turnover and fired a shot through Olthuis' legs. However, the RiverHawks would regain the lead minutes later, as Auffrey would set up his fourth goal of the net, getting the puck to Jason Dolgy, who sent it to a sprawling Jim Gehring who slid it in.
The Havoc once again found the back of the net to narrow the lead to one once again, but the RiverHawks were able to shut the door in the final minutes to maintain the victory.
The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Thursday, March 24th as they face the Knoxville Ice Bears. It's the final Pucks, Bucks, and Brews game of the season featuring dollar drafts! The puck drops at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at the James Brown Arena Box Office, by calling 1-877-4AUGTIX, or by visiting www.georgialinatix.com.
