Knoxville Smokies News Release
PEARL, MS . - Matt Garza made his first rehab start of the season for the Tennessee Smokies tossing 2.2 innings as they fell 3-0 to the Mississippi Braves in a five-inning, rain-shortened contest. The game marks the third time in the last four gamedays that the Smokies have been affected by inclement weather.
Rehabbing from a strained left lat injury he suffered in mid-February, Garza (0-1) was saddled with the loss pitching the first 2.2 innings allowing an earned run on a hit and two walks. He threw 42 pitches with 25 crossing the zone for strikes.
After the game was originally delayed 1 hour and 32 minutes due to rain, it was called with two-outs in the bottom of the fifth inning right after the Braves tacked on two more runs.
Braeden Schlehuber put the Braves on the board first in the bottom of the second with a two-out, RBI single that scored Christian Marrero.
Jose Martinez added the other two runs for the Braves against Smokies righty Matt Loosen with a two-out, two run single that plated Emerson Landoni and Mycal Jones to make it 3-0.
Michael Lee (3-1) earned the victory in his second start of the season shutting out the Smokies in five innings while yielding only two hits and collecting six strikeouts.
The Smokies and Braves will continue their five-game series tomorrow night at 8:00 ET when Tennessee sends right-hander Dallas Beeler (2-2, 3.16) to the mound against Mississippi righty J.R. Graham (1-1, 3.09) at Trustmark Park.
