Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH - If he could, Ramon Garcia would pitch against the Akron Aeros every time he takes the mound. The Erie lefty beat the Aeros again on Tuesday night, as the SeaWolves spoiled the opener of Akron's eight game homestand with an 8-5 victory at Canal Park.
Garcia (6-6) improved to 4-0 on the season against Akron. He worked seven innings and gave up three runs on five hits. He didn't issue a walk and struck out eight, matching his season-high. At one point, he retired 13 hitters in a row.
Garcia, a 27-year-old from Santo Domingo, lowered his overall ERA to 3.96, but against the Aeros, it stands at 3.08.
The Aeros (47-30) took a 1-0 lead on Garcia in the second on a pair of doubles by Thomas Neal and Jeremie Tice, the latter driving in Tice's eighth RBI since joining the club on Friday.
The SeaWolves then went to work on Akron starter Giovanni Soto (5-4), scoring one in the third to tie it, and two more in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Brandon Douglas was at the center of both rallies, tripling and scoring in the third, and blasting a run-scoring double in the fourth.
Soto settled after that and worked through six innings, holding Erie to just four hits.
After the Aeros pulled to within 3-2 on a Juan Diaz home run in the sixth, the SeaWolves (36-39) scored three in the seventh to take a 6-2 lead. Former Aeros shortstop Niuman Romero clubbed a two-run homer off Bryan Price in the inning, his fifth homer and 43rd RBI of the season.
Refusing to fold the tent, Neal offered a two-run shot in the eighth for Akron, which made it 7-5, at the time. For Neal it was number five on the season.
Bruce Rondon came on for Erie in the ninth and retired the side in order for his third save. Rondon, one of the Tigers top prospects, reportedly hit triple digits on some of the scout and team radar guns behind home plate.
The Aeros and SeaWolves will play game two of the series on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05. LHP Kelvin De La Cruz (4-7, 4.00) will start for Erie, while RHP Steven Wright (6-4, 1.64) will start for the Aeros. All Aeros games are broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
