LAST GAME: The B-Mets matched a season-high with 18 hits and plated at least one run in all but three innings to defeat the Erie SeaWolves 11-5 last night at Jerry Uht Park. Seven different B-Mets collected multiple hits, led by Wilfredo Tovar who tied a career-high with four. The club finished 5-4 on the nine-game roadtrip, their longest of the season and has won five of their last six games. Despite allowing a season-high eight hits and five runs over seven innings, B-Mets starter Zack Wheeler earned his seventh win. James Avery was tagged for a career-high 13 hits and allowed eight runs (seven earned) over 4.1 innings in the loss. Edgar Ramirezprovided two scoreless innings of relief for Binghamton.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Cory Mazzoni (1-0, 0.00) makes his second start of the season and first at NYSEG Stadium. The Pennsylvania native fired a complete-game in his Double-A debut against the Akron Aeros in the nightcap of a doubleheader on June 20. He allowed just one unearned run on five hits and struck out four over seven innings to help the -Mets snap a four-game losing streak. Selected in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft out of North Carolina State, Mazzoni started his season with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A), going 5-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 12 starts in the Florida State League.
LHP Richard Zagone (0-0, ---) makes his first start of the year for the Baysox after getting transferred from the Frederick Keys (High-A) yesterday. He allowed one run on four hits over six innings in his previous start for the Keys against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on June 21. Zagone went 3-1 with a 2.91 ERA in 13 appearances (nine starts) in the Carolina League. He also made two starts with the Norfolk Tides (AAA), going 1-0 while not allowing a run in 11.1 innings. Selected in the 6th round of the 2008 draft out of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Zagone is in his fifth pro season and third with the Bowie Baysox.
BIG NIGHT AT THE PLATE: Shortstop Wilfredo Tovar became the second B-Met in as many days to collect four hits. Wilmer Flores went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI on Sunday afternoon. Tovar drove in three runs with three singles and a double. It was the first time he had a four-hit game since he went 4-for-5 on four singles as a Savannah Sand Gnat on July 16, 2011.
SPREADING OUT THE OFFENSE: The B-Mets matched a season-high with 18 hits, but never had more than four in any inning. The B-Mets also finished one run shy of a season-high, but never scored more than two in any frame.
GETTING IT DONE ON THE ROAD: The B-Mets return home after going 5-4 on their longest roadtrip of the year. After dropping their first three games in Akron, they took five of the next six improving to 21-20 on the road this season.
HAVENS SLUGGING: Reese Havens hit a two-run home run last night after going deep on Sunday afternoon. It was the fifth time in his career and second time as a B-Met that he has homered in consecutive games. Three of his five home runs this season have been hit at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, Pennsylvania.
TAKING THEIR SWEET TIME: The average game time in the four-game series in Erie was 3:08.
OFF ON THE WRONG FOOT: The B-Mets take on the Bowie Baysox for the first time this season tonight. Binghamton is 3-6 this year in the first game of the season against a new opponent.
AGAINST THE BAYSOX: The B-Mets welcome in the Baysox for their only visit in 2012. Binghamton went 3-4 versus Bowie in 2011, including a 1-3 mark at NYSEG Stadium. Overall the B-Mets have gone 90-104 against the Baysox, including a 48-48 record at home. The all-time series dates back to 1993.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their four-game series against the Baysox tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. RHP Gonzalez Germen takes the mound against RHP Tim Bascom.
