Newark Bears News Release

June 6, 2006 - The Bears lost a heartbreaker to the Somerset Patriots in Bridgewater Tuesday night, 4-2. And they only gave up one hit.

History was in the making for Bears' starter Joe Gannon - again. It was August 17, 2004 when Gannon tossed the only no-hitter in Bears' history. Like Tuesday night's game, that was against Somerset in Commerce Bank Park. On Tuesday, Joe Gannon pitched no-hit ball for more than six innings. But in the bottom of the seventh, Gannon lost control, walking two batters and hitting a third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Gannon gave up a grand slam to Mike Lockwood on a 1-2 count. The no-hitter vanished along with the Bears 2-0 lead.

It was the first home run Gannon had given up all season. He would finish the inning and the game for his second complete game of the season. In his eight innings of work, he allowed just the one hit, while walking nine and striking out five Patriots.

The Bears scored first when Jonathan Thomas smacked a single in the second, scoring Michael Moore. They added to that in the third when Al Benjamin stole second. Patriots second baseman George Sandel lost the Travis Anderson throw, allowing Liu Rodriguez to score from third on the play.

At the plate, Rodriguez and Dario Delgado were both 2-for-4 on the night. Left fielder Jose Herrera was 2-for-3, drawing one of three Bears walks on the night. Donaldo Mendez extended his on-base streak to 17 games and kept his 9-game hitting streak alive with a double.

This three-game series continues tomorrow night in Bridgewater. The Bears will send RHP Hateuy Mendoza to the mound while the Patriots are scheduled to counter with RHP Jason Shiell.
