Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - June 6, 2006 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced today they have signed right-handed pitcher Enemencio Pacheco, and catcher Marcos Sanchez to contracts for the 2006 season. Both players will be in uniform tonight when the Newark Bears begin a three-game series with the Somerset Patriots at Commerce Bank Ballpark.
Pacheco is playing in his tenth professional season after signing as a non-drafted free agent with the Colorado Rockies in 1997. Last season, Pacheco appeared in 19 games posting an 8-5 record with the Lancaster Barnstormers. While playing for Birmingham of the double-A Southern League in 2003, Pacheco set career highs with 12 wins, 24 appearances, and 116 strikeouts. He was first in the league in wins, and second with a 2.56 ERA.
Sanchez is entering his 12th season in professional baseball after signing as a non-drafted free agent with the San Diego Padres in 1992. Last season, Sanchez appeared in 32 games with the Camden Riversharks hitting a career high .330, with 34 hits, including 14 for extra bases, scoring 17 runs and driving in 22. He also spent the 2004 season with the Nashua Pride.
In order to make room on the roster, the Bears released first baseman and former Atlantic League home run leader Keith Maxwell, left-handed pitcher David Glick, and placed right-handed pitcher Nick Maness on the inactive list. In addition, right-handed pitcher Joey Cole has been suspended indefinitely following his ejection from the game against Atlantic City on May 31, and outfielder Doug Devore announced his retirement.
