Eagles Sweep Stingrays to Capture 2017 Kelly Cup Championship
CHARLESTON, SC. - Eagles forward Luke Salazar's goal early in the second period proved to be the game-winner, as Colorado defeated the South Carolina Stingrays 2-1 in Game Four of the Kelly Cup Finals. The win gave the Eagles the 4-0 series sweep over the Stingrays and secured Colorado's first-ever Kelly Cup Championship and third league title, overall.
Colorado would jump on the board first when forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel deflected a shot from the point on the power play, beating South Carolina goalie Parker Milner and giving the Eagles a 1-0 edge with 2:50 remaining in the first period.
The lead would not last long, as just 35 seconds later Stingrays forward Derek Arnold would snag a rebound off the endwall and stuff it into the net to tie the game at 1-1 at the 17:45 mark of the opening frame. Colorado outshot South Carolina by a count of 22-8 in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Moving into the second period of action the Eagles would strike quickly, as Salazar grabbed a loose puck in the low slot and snapped it home to give Colorado the 2-1 edge just 1:19 into the middle frame.
Both clubs would exchange chances throughout the third period, but the Eagles would hold tight defensively to claim the 2-1 victory
Hafner finished the night with 25 saves on 26 shots, while Milner suffered the loss in allowing two goals on 44 shots.
