Game Preview: Steelhawks Stampede into Hershey
April 10, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (1-0) travel west to Hershey;s Giant Center to take on the Harrisburg Stampede (1-1) in the first of a three part series of the newly created Keystone Classic. Both teams are members of the National Conference and will play each other multiple times each season. Kickoff for this week's game is slated for 7:05pm on Friday, April 11th.
The Steelhawks are fresh off an exciting home opener that came down to a fantastic last stand defensively with under a minute left in regulation. Prior to that Reigning PIFL Offensive Player of the Week Adam Bednarik led the game winning drive and kick with a 14 yard touchdown pass to WR Brandon Renford for a 48-47 victory. They are facing a Harrisburg team that had a tough game in Nashville last weekend but has been putting up strong numbers in the first few weeks of the season.
Lehigh Valley's rookie wide receivers stepped up when it counted - Brandon Renford had the game winning touchdown catch (6 catches for 83 yds, 3 tds), and Scott Pillar had the game's first touchdown on a nine yard rush (4 catches for 67 yds, 2 tds). Quarterback Adam Bednarik threw for a total of 182 yards and 6 touchdowns.
The Steelhawks defense gave a strong performance in their debut, making stops and creating two crucial turnovers late in the game. DB Dwayne Hollis had two interceptions, including one on the final play to seal the game. He also led the defense with 10 tackles.
Harrisburg may be new to the PIFL, but they are an established franchise that has had success in other leagues. They won in convincing fashion over the Columbus Lions in the teams first PIFL game two weeks ago, but dropped a game to the Nashville Venom 40-31 this past weekend. The Stampede are led by veteran Quarterback E.J. Nemeth who in Week One set a PIFL record with eight rushing touchdowns. Defensively, LB Jermaine Thaxton is a proven veteran who last week intercepted his first pass of the season.
Check for score updates on the Steelhawks Facebook and Twitter accounts. The PIFL website and Facebook page will also have updates. The Steelhawks return to Stabler Arena for their next home game on April 26th, 7:00pm kickoff; that game is deemed "Friends and Family Night" presented by ESSA Bank & Trust. A special drawstring backpack will be given away to the first 1,000 fans through the door.
