"Nighthawk" Goes for Career INT Record Friday against Fire
April 10, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Defensive back Damian "Nighthawk" Daniels has been terrorizing secondaries around indoor football since joining the Lions back in 2007. A four-time Defensive Player of the Year in four different leagues, Daniels grabbed his 97th career interception last Saturday night against the Richmond Raiders, putting him one short of Kenny McIntyre's 98 career indoor football INTs and two short from grabbing the record himself. Daniels will have a chance to break that record as the Lions host the Georgia Fire on Friday night at 7 PM at the Columbus Civic Center.
Daniels played the first five seasons of his career for the Lions as they played in the WIFL, AIFA, and SIFL.
He earned league Defensive Player of the Year honors a whopping four times in his five years in Columbus (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011), picking up 76 interceptions during that time and helping the Lions to the 2010 SIFL title. In 2012, he headed south to join the rival Albany Panthers in the first season of the PIFL. He picked up the inaugural PIFL Defensive Player of the Year award in 2012, helping to bring the Panthers a championship. After staying with Albany for the 2013 season, Daniels returned to Columbus in the offeseason to play for the Lions. The "Nighthawk" got on the INT board for the season on Saturday with a pick against the Raiders.
"It means a lot to me," Daniels said of the record. "I've been waiting for this moment for a while. I've been inching closer to it, and I can't wait when it happens," said Daniels.
Ironically, Daniels may tie and/or break the record against many of his former Albany Panther teammates as they are now members of the Fire, including quarterback Cecil Lester, who was behind center for the Panthers' 2012 PIFL championship.
"It's a new team but definitely a lot of old faces," said Daniels.
However, the Shaw High School graduate is happy to be back with his hometown team to have a chance to break the record in front of Lions friends and family.
"It's huge whenever we make a defensive play at home, especially with the noise our crowd makes," Daniels said.
Plenty of great seats are available to watch Daniels possibly grab a piece of indoor football history and also to see the Lions face many of their former Albany foes now with the new intrastate rival Georgia Fire. For more information, contact the Lions at 706.322.3336.
