The Cincinnati Cyclones open the 2007-08 preseason with a trip to the Central Hockey League's (CHL) Youngstown Steelhounds. A total of 24 players are in camp with the club looking to make an impression on second-year Head Coach Chuck Weber.
Last season, the Cyclones finished 37-29-6 and in third place in the North Division. After an upset of Toledo in the opening round of the Kelly Cup playoffs, the Cyclones were eliminated in the North Division Finals by Dayton in seven games.
This game marks the club's first contest since that seventh game. Nine of the 18 players that dressed in that final game are back with the club this season.
KEY RETURNERS:
Jean-Michel Daoust led the club with 32 goals and had 62 points.
Matt Macdonald registered a team-high 131 penalty minutes.
Cedrick Desjardins recorded 24 of the squad's 37 wins in goal.
WHO TO WATCH FOR:
Thomas Beauregard, on assignment from Montreal via Hamilton, registered 71 goals with Acadia-Bathurst in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
David Deshairnais, in on a tryout agreement, collected 108 points (38-70-108) with Chicoutimi (QMJHL).
Tyler Howells, on assignment from Nashville via Milwaukee, solidifies the blueline. Highlight of last season was assisting on the NCAA Championship goal with 19 seconds left in that game for Michigan State.
Bryan Schmidt, also on assignment from Nashville via Milwaukee, collected 18 points (5-13-18) as a defenseman with Manchester (AHL).
KNOW THY ENEMY:
Youngstown opened its preseason with a 4-1 loss at Johnstown (ECHL) on Wednesday night.
UP NEXT:
The Cyclones take on Dayton on Sunday (Oct. 14) at the Kettering Rec Center at 7pm. There is no broadcast of any type of that game. Tickets available at the door.
