Seattle Sounders FC News Release

A weekend of exceptional promise is awaiting Seattle Sounders FC as the push for an MLS Cup playoff berth and Cascadia Cup are at hand.

Sounders FC dropped their first CONCACAF Champions League group stage match on Tuesday night as they fell, 1-0, to CS Herediano. Seattle (3-1-0, 9 points) remains atop Group D with Monterrey and Comunicaciones in second with six points.

On Saturday night in Vancouver Sounders FC can secure both their place in the MLS postseason, plus a place on their mantle for the Cascadia Cup with a victory over Whitecaps FC. The match at Empire Field begins at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on KONG 6/16 and THIS-TV.

The Rave Green's journey of some 9,000 miles will begin with the relatively short bus ride to British Columbia for the weekend. They can clinch a playoff berth with a win or draw. Second in the Supporters' Shield sweepstakes, Seattle (14-6-9, 51 points) seeks a fifth consecutive road win across all competitions as Vancouver (4-14-10, 22 points) plays its final match at Empire.

After their 3-0 home thumping of D.C. United last week Sounders FC have gone 10-2-4 in their last 16 MLS matches and 17-3-4 in all competitions since May 28. One of the few teams to take points during that run was Vancouver with a 2-2 draw at Seattle on June 11 thanks to a late wonder strike from Swiss forward Eric Hassli. That was the first meeting between Seattle and Vancouver at the MLS level after 122 between the cities' top representatives from 1974-2008.

Whitecaps FC are 4-3-5 and have won their last two at home. They have recently found firmer footing, winning two and drawing once in the last six MLS outings. Vancouver moves to its permanent home, the renovated BC Place stadium downtown on October 2, hosting Portland in the final Cascadia fixture of 2011.

From Vancouver, Sounders FC fly to Texas and then on to Guatemala for their fifth-round Champions League date on September 27 against Comunicaciones. Their next MLS match is October 1 at New England. A four-match home stand begins October 4 with the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final.

Arlo White will handle the commentary on both KIRO FM and KONG 6/16 on Saturday. La Gran D 99.3 FM will also air that match.
