POST GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Latricia Trammell
On what she learned about her team through their adversity today...
"Yeah, I think they outrebounded us by one. And yes, I agree they did a good job too, but I thought we also did a good job. I mean Satou [Sabally] still had eleven rebounds, and then Tasha [Natasha Howard] with seven, it was a good balanced effort. But I think what hurt us worse than anything, in my opinion, is just not being able to defend as a team. It was a lot more out on an island, go team go, whoever was defending the ball, and there was no help. And that's something that we preach about all the time. But again, we got to get back in the gym and work on it."
On if there's a way to defend Breanna Stewart...
"No. There is. And we just got away from it. So, I guess on a positive, save it for next time."
On if there were any surprises in New York's scheme...
"No. It was nothing. I mean, their spacing was really good on offense, they move it, and you can tell there's a lot of veterans on that team. And Stew [Breanna Stewart] is one of the best. So, I knew at one point when she scored and I just told them, I was like, come on, that's a better job. And she looked over and smiled at me. I thought, oh, she's coming with a vengeance, so - Sandy [Brondello] does an incredible job. But I do think this is a team we can beat."
On what has allowed Kalani Brown to fit into their system so effectively, so quickly and how vital her presence is in Teaira McCowan absence...
"Well, I think with Kalani, I had her as a rookie, so she knows the system. And that was very beneficial, I should say, coming in because she already knew what I expected defensively. And so, I think Lani, you know playing overseas, and then having a great training camp with us made us feel extremely comfortable because she deserves to be in this league. And so, I think Kalani has done an amazing job. I think she will continue to do that. Yea, T [Teaira McCowan] is a big missing link. She definitely was watching the game, because she told me that we were looking forward to getting fully loaded again."
On Brown being taken out in the third quarter after scoring two baskets and "not getting many touches" in the second half...
"Now that one's the defense part. And I think it just that growth part. Right. So, I agree with you. I just think it goes back to growth and not trying to win it all in that one possession. But get back to playing as a team and moving the ball and making them have a chance to defend, I think is a growth area. And they're going to see that on film when we go back. But one thing about this team, they'll grind and so we put up you know, 90 points, which is fantastic. We just gave up too many in that third."
On if having two bigs with pace goes along with her game plan and...
"I think I mean we had to change a little bit of the philosophy because of our situation, you know. But like you said, we just have to keep grinding and do those little things. Like, we won three out of the four quarters, you know, it was just that third quarter. So, you got to give us credit for that, you know, continuing to battle under our circumstances. But this team is ready to get home, and they're only talking about our next opponent."
On her thoughts about why they couldn't close the gap in the third and fourth quarters...
"I think because New York executed, you know, they just kept punching back. They didn't like that momentum swinging our direction. And so, they tightened up defensively even more, and they turned their defense into offense. And we've got to, we've done a really good job of doing that. But we just kind of got away from it this evening."
On talks with the team on how to improve their record on the road...
"Well, one of the things that I always have tried to do, I mean, because I do think our team competes. And when I usually come in the locker room, a lot of times I don't say too much, because I always like to go back and watch. In my 30 years, I've noticed that there's times I've came in and said, oh, we got to do this, and this, and I go back and watch and go, you know, we didn't do too bad there. So, when I walked in, I said, "Well, what do you think?" And everyone, like they practiced it, they said third quarter. So, they're aware, I mean they're professionals. They know what they've got to do. And they talked a little more about the offense, and some of the areas that we need to enhance going into Wednesday's game. And they're not going to be satisfied. I want to tell you that we're going to go back home and come back out with a vengeance."
On if there is any conversation with Veronica Burton passing up open shots...
"Yeah. I agree with that. When she knocked down that one in the corner and it went in, I thought okay, here she goes. But I think you know, a lot of teams are going under on screens, and you know, sometimes - Hey, she's a great shooter. She needs to let it fly and be confident in her shot. Because again, we know that she can do it. She just got to continue and how you do that is getting in the gym and shoot, you know, I mean, that's a big thing."
