Seattle Sounders FC News Release
A long road trip awaits Seattle Sounders FC this week as it continues the climb up the MLS ladder. The Rave Green finishes a stretch of four out of five away this week when they play D.C. United on Wednesday night at RFK Stadium and at the Columbus Crew on Saturday night. Both games start at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be televised live on KONG 6/16.
Although depleted by injury, Sounders FC (3-2-3) is growing in strength. Seattle, winners of two in a row and unbeaten in the last six, has recovered from a slow start by going undefeated and claiming nine points in the last five matches. The half-dozen games without a defeat matches the longest in MLS in 2011 and has lifted the club into a tie for second place in the Western Conference.
Once this week is complete, Sounders FC can settle in for a three-match home stand on the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field, beginning with the first Cascadia Cup fixture on May 14 against the Portland Timbers. Seattle also hosts Sporting Kansas City on May 21 and FC Dallas on May 25. By the time that home stand ends, the season will nearly be one-third finished.
A spirited Sounders FC performance resulted in the biggest win margin in 12 games, dating back to late September. Alvaro Fernandez scored early and Brad Evans twice found the net in the second half for a 3-nil home victory over Toronto FC.
For the Rave Green, the upcoming destinations are rife with fond memories. They are a combined 5-0-0 in league and cup play in Washington, D.C. and Columbus.
DC. United (2-4-1) is struggling, having lost three in a row while allowing 11 goals. That includes a 4-1 defeat at Houston last Friday. Two of those losses came at home, where United is 1-2-2. The 16 goals conceded is the most in MLS.
Charlie Davies leads MLS with five goals, three of those coming from the penalty spot during the first three matches. Davies, on loan to United from Sochaux of France, is making his comeback following severe injuries sustained in an October 2009 car crash.
Sounders FC has taken all six points from its previous two trips to RFK and leads the series 2-1-1. Seattle also won a third meeting in the nation's capital, beating D.C. United, 2-1, in the 2009 U.S. Open Cup final.
A rebuilt Columbus (3-1-3) has also gone unbeaten in six matches following a 2-1 home win over Vancouver. The Crew have scored only seven goals this season yet have allowed only five. They are 3-0-1 at home. Seattle has not lost in five meetings with Columbus, going 3-0-2, including a triumph in the 2010 Open Cup final at home.
Arlo White will provide the play-by-play on both KONG 6/16. Wednesday's game can be seen live outside of Seattle on ROOT SPORTS and Saturday's game can also be heard on 97.3 KIRO FM. La Gran D 99.3 FM will broadcast each match and THIS-TV will broadcast Saturday's match.
