The Week Ahead

A busy week kicks off with a midweek matchup against a division rival tonight! Winners of four straight, the Winterhawks are set to battle the Everett Silvertips, who have matched Portland's 73 points but have played five more games. Despite the Silvertips' success this season, the Winterhawks have held their rival to just one win in the season series thus far, going 5-1-0-0 against the 'Tips in 2023-24.

After tonight, Portland treks across the border to open a home-and-home with Vancouver, who has points in eight straight games. The two teams then head south to the VMC for Mascot Night in Portland on Saturday, before the Hawks wrap up the three-in-three weekend with another duel against Everett on Sunday at Angel of the Winds Arena.

Scoring Spree

Big night for fans of offensive talent as the WHL's two highest-scoring teams face off at the VMC. Portland leads the league in goals with 239, while Everett trails right behind with 235 of their own.

The Winterhawks and Silvertips have set the bar high with scoring throughout their respective lineups - the Winterhawks' high-octane line of Gabe Klassen, James Stefan and Josh Davies (inj.) has gotten the headlines throughout the year, but names like Jack O'Brien, Diego Buttazzoni, Marcus Nguyen, Josh Zakreski and now Nate Danielson pose quite the threat on other lines as well. Meanwhile, Everett's top talents like Vegas prospect Ben Hemmerling and Nashville pick Austin Roest continue to put on a show, but don't sleep on Dominik Rymon's team-leading 30 goals or Teague Patton's team-leading six points against Portland this season.

Another common thread between these two offensive juggernauts - scoring from the blue line. Portland's Luca Cagnoni leads all WHL defensemen in scoring this season, and Tyson Jugnauth has posted more than a point-per-game pace through his first 20+ WHL games. Everett rookie Tarin Smith has found his stride with 37 points for the 'Tips this year, and trade acquisition Parker Berge has been as advertised with 15 points in 18 games in Everett since joining the team in January.

Playoffs???

With the Saskatoon Blades becoming the first team to clinch a berth in the 2024 WHL Playoffs, you know the Western Conference-leading Winterhawks aren't far behind. Portland's "magic number" is set at three points, meaning the Winterhawks are potentially just two games away from qualifying for the postseason for the 14th consecutive campaign.

A win tonight gets them closer, but keep an eye on the Tri-City/Seattle game as well. Those teams are neck-and-neck for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference, and depending on the result, could help the Hawks clinch early should the loser of tonight's game drop another game this week before Portland hits the ice in Vancouver on Friday.

It's certainly a bit confusing with the different potential clinching scenarios, but what's clear is that postseason hockey is very nearly on its way back to the Rose City - get excited, Hawks fans!
