Gambrell's Third Period Goal Earns Saints 3-2 Win

GREEN BAY, WI- The Dubuque Fighting Saints scored the game's final three goals and got the game-winning tally from Dylan Gambrell in a 3-2 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers at the Resch Center on Tuesday night. With the victory, the Fighting Saints pulled within one point of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for 2nd Place in the USHL's Eastern Conference standings heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

Dubuque would quickly find themselves in a 2-0 hole as the Gamblers scored a pair of goals in the game's first 5:06. Jason Dhooghe struck first on a broken play. A shot attempt from Grant Fredrik at the right point hit a body in front of the Dubuque goal. The puck bounced right to Dhooghe in the shot, and the forward maneuvered around Dubuque netminder Jacob Nehama to make it 1-0 at 1:51.

Green Bay would up its lead on a rebound goal from Marc Michaelis. Nehama stopped a Matt Berkovitz shot from the left wing, but the puck popped loose to Michaelis who cashed in for his 15th goal of the season at 5:06.

After Head Coach and General Manager Matt Shaw took a timeout and calmed his team down, Dubuque was able to cut into the Gamblers lead as Evan Smith scored to make the score 2-1. Gordie Green sent the puck to Smith in the faceoff circle on the left wing. Smith quickly snapped a shot to the net that beat Green Bay goaltender Kevin Reich five-hole at 7:46.

Dubuque was able to even the score at 9:37 of the second period after a tenacious shift. After Reich denied several chances, Dubuque continued to control the puck and sent it back to the left point. Defenseman William Lagesson walked around and Green Bay forward and skated in on Reich. With Willie Knierim screening in front, he snapped a shot over the goaltender's blocker for his second goal of the season.

Gambrell would score the lone goal of the third period, connecting on a play in transition. Green dished the puck to Gambrell on the left wing. The forward kicked the puck from his skates to his stick and skated in on goal. He snapped a shot over the catching glove of Reich for his 16th goal of the year to give Dubuque the 3-2 lead.

Dubuque would outshoot Green Bay 30-24 on the evening. Nehama earned his USHL best 28th win of the season, stopping 22 shots.

Dubuque's final home game of the regular season is this Friday night, April 10 versus the Tri-City Storm. It's Fan Appreciation Night presented by American Trust.
