Galaxy waive Costa Rican defender

(Carson, CA Tuesday, November 15, 2005) - The Los Angeles Galaxy have waived defender Michael Umaña, it was announced today by Galaxy President and General Manager Doug Hamilton.

"Fortunately for Michael, he is moving closer to securing a place on Costa Rica's national team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup," Hamilton said. "However, in order to cement his place on that team, he needs to play quality minutes on a regular basis. By waiving him today, we are giving him the chance to do just that."

Umaña, 23, played in 15 games for the Galaxy in 2005 - six of them starts - and logged a total of 756 minutes. He did not score a goal or register an assist. Additionally, he saw action in five games for the Galaxy reserves, staring four and playing 367 minutes. The Costa Rican international defender joined the Galaxy from Club Sport Herediano of the Costa Rican Primera Division prior to the 2005 season.
