CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2006) - The Los Angeles Galaxy have acquired forward Santino Quaranta from D.C. United in exchange for a partial allocation and a conditional 2008 MLS SuperDraft pick, the club announced today.

Quaranta, 21, is already in his sixth MLS season and has appeared in 62 career MLS games, scoring 14 goals. As a 16 year old in 2001, Quaranta was the youngest player ever drafted by Major League Soccer at the time of his selection. The Baltimore, Md. native made nine appearances for the U.S. National Team in 2005, but has played in just four games for D.C. United this season, missing time with a right hamstring injury.

"With this move, we have added a young, exciting and dynamic player who appreciates the incredible opportunity to play with the Galaxy," Galaxy President and General Manager Alexi Lalas said. "We expect him to contribute immediately as we continue the process of improving this team."

Quaranta burst on to the MLS scene as a rookie in 2001, scoring five goals and registering one assist in 16 games en route to earning a trip to the MLS All-Star game. Limited by various injuries over his next three seasons, Quaranta appeared in 18 games in 2005 and was the third leading scorer for D.C. United, registering five goals and five assists.

"We are pleased to have Santino join us," Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop said. "He is a young, electrifying player who has played internationally and has the potential to add a lot of quality to our team."

In 2005, Quaranta played in the Gold Cup and World Cup Qualifying matches for the U.S., registering one assist in nine games. Previously, Quaranta was a star for the U.S. Under-17 team, appearing in 32 games in 2001 and scoring 17 goals and registering 11 assists. In 2000, Quaranta trained with the Under-17 team in Bradenton, Florida.

Quaranta is expected to meet the Galaxy in Houston on Tuesday evening and will be available for the Galaxy's game against the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 5:00 p.m. PT.
