LONDON, Ontario - Colorado Mammoth coach Gary Gait and captain Gavin Prout led Canada to a 15-10 victory over the United States on Saturday to give their country its first World Lacrosse Championship since 1978.

Gait, 39, scored four goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner, as Canada ended the Americans' 32-game winning streak at the worlds. Gait moved to attack for the tournament from his normal midfielder position and went on to tally 21 goals in eight games. He added five assists to finish third on the team in scoring with 26 points.

"It was the only championship I'd never won and now that I've finally got it I can fade away into the sunset," Gait told the Canadian Press. The Victoria, British Columbia, native won three NCAA championships at Syracuse and won titles in both the indoor and outdoor professional leagues before retiring as a player and coaching the Mammoth to the 2006 National Lacrosse League championship.

Prout added a goal and two assists in the final. The midfielder from Whitby, Ontario, tallied nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in the tournament. John Grant Jr. of the Rochester Knighthawks led the Canadian squad, which was predominantly comprised of NLL players, with 42 points on 21 goals and 21 assists.

Mammoth defenseman Jay Jalbert scored twice for the Americans in the final. The Huntington, N.Y., native scored 15 goals in the tournament.
