GREENVILLE _ Adam LaRoche hit his league-leading sixth home run and five Greenville pitchers stalled the Southern League's best offensive team Tuesday night, giving the G-Braves a 4-3 win over East Division leader Carolina.

LaRoche's first-inning home run gave Greenville (9-8) a 2-0 lead. The G-Braves, getting five strong innings from starter Adam Wainwright (1-1) and three ninth-inning strikeouts from Kevin Barry, never trailed. Joe Winkelsas pitched out of an eighth-inning jam, and Barry struck out the last two batters after giving up two walks and an RBI double to Brandon Harper.

The Mudcats entered the game with a .292 team batting average, easily the highest in the Southern League. Carolina had won nine of its previous 10 games.

Jason Fitzgerald's two-out, two-run double gave Greenville a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning. The Mudcats threatened in the eighth, when the first two batters reached safely. But Winkelsas retired Miguel Carbrera and Matt Padgett to end the threat.

The Mudcats, who also lead the league in stolen bases with 19, used a surprise stolen base to score in the fourth. Cabrera, who opened the inning with a double, stole third base with two outs and scored on Bryce Terveen's errant throw.

The teams meet again Wednesday in a 7:15 p.m. game that pits Carolina lefty Dontrelle Willis (1-0) against Greenville right-hander Bubba Nelson (2-0). Willis has allowed two earned runs in 17 innings, striking out 17 batters.
