Future Steelheads: Austin Osmanski
July 18, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brampton Steelheads News Release
With their pick in the sixth round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection, the Mississauga Steelheads looked to our neighbours south of the border and selected defenceman Austin Osmanski 105th overall.
A native of East Aurora, New York, Austin was the first American born player to be selected by the Steelheads in this year's priority selection. This past season he played for the Buffalo Regals of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
In 40 regular season games with the Regals Austin tallied 2 goals and 12 assists while holding down the blue line. He also played in all four of Buffalo's playoff games.
Austin participated in the 2014 OHL Cup playing on behalf of the TPG Thunder. In four tournament games with the Thunder he recorded 2 assists.
Prior to being drafted by the Steelheads, Austin was one of 80 skaters born in 1998 invited to the 2014 OHL Development Combine on March 21-23. He represented Team Grey during the combine's series of pre-draft tests. In the four 4-on-4 matches that took place at the end of the combine, Austin scored for Team Grey in a 4-3 shootout victory over Team White.
The Steelheads were not the only team that sought after Austin's hockey services. Along with being a draftee of the Mississauga Steelheads Austin was also chosen by the Youngstown Phantoms in the 21st round (329th overall) in the 2014 USHL Entry Draft.
Austin is described as a defenseman that can make instinctive and intelligent plays in both the offensive and defensive zones. His ability to be in the right place on the ice along with his 6'2 174 lb frame is a combination that can lead to success in the OHL.
As training camp draws closer Austin will look to get himself ready to compete amongst the many talented defencemen on the Steelheads roster. Should he earn a spot, Austin will not only be another solid defender on the blue line, he would also be the only American born player on the roster.
