North Carolina FC News Release
Cary, NC (September 2, 2015) - The Carolina RailHawks announced on Wednesday that defender Futty Danso has been selected for the Gambian National Team to participate in a qualification match for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Cameroon on Sunday, September 6th at Independence Stadium in Bakau, Gambia.
Danso, 32, departed for Casablanca, Morocco on Monday to make himself available for national team duties. He made his senior international debut for Gambia on March 29, 2011 in a friendly against Equatorial Guinea. Danso will return September 8th, thus will not be available for selection for the RailHawks' Fall Season home match against Atlanta Silverbacks on Friday, September 4th.
The Serekunda native has played in 14 games (13 starts) and has logged 1,119 minutes for the RailHawks in 2015. Danso joined the team after enjoying success at the RailHawks' U-23 level back in 2008, when he played in the USL Premier Development League.
The Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as the African Nations Cup, is the main international soccer competition in Africa. It is sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and was first held in 1957. The Africa Cup of Nations tournament is held every two years; Ivory Coast won the 2015 edition of the tournament.
Danso is the second RailHawks player this season to be called into a national team camp. In June, midfielder Chris Nurse was selected for the Guyana National Team to play in a 2018 World Cup Qualifier series against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The RailHawks will return to WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday, September 4th at 7:30 pm to host Atlanta Silverbacks.
