December 14, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, MI.--- The two-time reigning Colonial Cup Champions of the United Hockey League, the Muskegon Fury, in collaboration with their long-time archrivals, the Kalamazoo Wings, have announced on this date two special events which are designed expressly to benefit the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.
Two of the more tradition-steeped franchises in minor pro hockey annals, the Fury and the K-Wings will clash in a pair of special Alumni Games to be both scheduled in conjunction with official UHL games between the two teams, which are currently in a fierce fight for first place in both the Central Division and the overall UHL standings.
Both the Fury and Kalamazoo will enlist their alumni teams from a vast array of top-flight personnel who have prominently played throughout the enormous history that has been achieved in both hockey-rich communities. The Fury Alumni Team will consist of players from the 46-years of pro hockey history in Muskegon, which includes the eras of the Zephyrs, Mohawks and Lumberjacks of the IHL and the contemporary Fury of today's UHL. As for Kalamazoo, the Wings squad of yesteryear notables will include players that have been clad in the K-Wings crest since the franchise debut as an International Hockey League club in 1974 through today's incarnation in the UHL.
A lifelong Muskegon native and resident who, himself, was weaned on the extraordinary history of his local pro team's history, the Fury Team Owner and Club President Tony Lisman is acutely aware of the benefits, magnitude and far-reaching effects of these two extraordinary events. "Considering the rich history of both the Muskegon and Kalamazoo hockey franchises, both organizations truly realize how important and dedicated our fans have always been and how much they have always been there for us. With these two alumni games, all of us are presented a wonderful opportunity to reach out and offer assistance to the many victims of the horrific hurricanes that paralyzed parts of our nation in this past year. Both the Fury and Wings organizations owe much of their success to their many great and loyal fans and with that their respective community spirit. These two alumni games should be great fun for all of the fans as well as for us, but most importantly, for the benefits of the Red Cross and those many, many victims of the hurricanes."
To add to the excitement and enjoyment of these two major events, each of the Alumni Games will be played as part of a hockey doubleheader in which today's top two Central Division teams will serve as the second game of the twin bill. The first of the two clashes will be played at Kalamazoo's home of Wings Stadium on Saturday, January 21st prior to the Fury / K-Wings contest. Face-off for the benefit bout is set for 5:00 pm.
The second Alumni Game is on the docket for Saturday, February 11th at Muskegon's home of Walker Arena. This game will also act as first game of the doubleheader as the Alumni Game will commence at 5:00 pm followed by the UHL collision between the Wings and the Fury at 7:30 pm. As in Kalamazoo, the purchase of a ticket to the actual game between the Fury and Kalamazoo will also serve as the admission to the preliminary Alumni event.
Thus far, already, the Fury have successfully enlisted a number of names who have contributed mightily to the great history of pro hockey in Muskegon. The first list includes alumni players the ilk of DUKE BOUSKILL, TODD CHARLESWORTH, MIKE FEASBY, SCOTT FEASBY, SERGEI KHARIN, ROB MELANSON, JEFF NAPIERALA, DARREL NEWMAN and RON STEPHENSON.
