Fury looks to dig themselves out of a hole

February 15, 2003 - National Women's Basketball League (NWBL)
Dallas Fury News Release

After suffering their second loss of the season, the Tennessee Fury can't sit and think about what could have been, they have to regroup and play the top team in the league the Springfield Spirit on Sunday night at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.

The Spirit is 3-0 and did what Tennessee couldn't do, they beat the Birmingham Power last night 72-69. The Spirit has also beaten the Fury, 97-87 in the season opener at Springfield, but suffered a loss at the hands of the Fury in a pre-season exhibition game. This will be the third meeting for the two teams with two more games left, both of them to be played in Springfield.

Coach Rodney Minggia knows that there is work to be done to get ready for Springfield but did not expect to be in the position he is currently in.

"I didn't think we would be 0-2 to start the season but we still have the same philosophy. We still need to be aggressive and attack, we can't get into a half court game against Springfield. We put in a few things since we played them that may help us in our preparation and we need to concentrate more on the defensive end of things because we haven't done as great a job as we can."

Rodney also knows that he must do something to stop Rebecca Lobo who torched the Fury in their last meeting for 25 points and 14 boards.

"With Rebecca we need to give the post a little more help, she can hurt us outside as well as inside. I can't ask the post to cover her alone, we need to keep the ball out of her hands, put more pressure on the ball and help down."

"We don't match up against them that well because of their size, we have a 5-9 player covering 6-2 player, I feel like we match up better with Birmingham. We need to be ready, we seem to play good in the first half of every game but the second half is where we are running into difficulty."

Whatever the case may be the Fury surely doesn't want to start the season off 0-3. With a repeat performance, that could very well be the case.

The action gets underway at 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Tickets are still available at Tickets Unlimited. You can purchase them online at www.knoxvilletickets.com or by calling 865.565.4444.
