Fury Fall to Flash in Fourth
January 17, 2020 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) - Ontario Fury News Release
(ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA) - For 45 minutes Thursday night, the Ontario Fury looked like they were going to pull off the upset of the season in the Major Arena Soccer League.
But the Monterrey Flash were not going to let their unblemished mark fall without a fight.
The visitors scored six times in the final quarter to hand the Fury its fifth consecutive loss, as the Flash won 7-5 at Toyota Arena.
Ontario went into halftime with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Juan Carlos Gonzalez and Franck Tayou. In the third, Tayou gave Ontario a 3-0 lead just 1:08 into the second half, as he spun a pass from Gonzalez past Monterrey goalkeeper Berna Valdovinos.
The Flash finally got on the board midway through the third, catching the Fury in a change on defense. Erick Jhon Ponce sent a pass across the middle, and Fury defender Israel Sesay, trying to break up the pass, knocked it into his own net to make it 3-1.
But Ontario responded twice to close out the quarter, scoring twice on the power play. Gonzalez set up Evan McNeley, who fired a shot into the far post. Then it was Tayou completing a hat trick, as he knocked home a pass off the board from Maicon de Abreu and a 5-1 lead after three quarters.
And that's when Monterrey mounted a comeback. Edgar Flores started the onslaught, as he scored as the Fury scrambled after Ontario goalkeeper Chris Toth made two point-blank saves in front.
The momentum shift was pushed farther, as the Flash got back-to-back power plays. With de Abreu off, Miguel Vaca slotted a pass from Hugo Puentes off a Fury defender and through Toth's legs to make it 5-3. Thirty-six seconds later, Juan Topete was sent off for charging from behind, as the Flash pushed the ball forward past the Fury defense. On the ensuing shootout attempt, Jorge Rios beat Toth, and it was 5-4.
Monterrey then tied the game with 8:51 to go, as Rios picked up his second of the game, taking a pass from Victor Quiroz and knocking it home.
The Fury were able to settle the game down from there, but were having difficulty generating shots, and the Flash took advantage. With 3:03 to go, Vaca took a long throw from Valdovinos and volleyed the ball into the far post for the go-ahead goal. Vaca and Valovinos connected on a second goal to seal the game with Toth pulled for an extra attacker.
Ontario does not have much time to regroup, as they will travel to Kent, Wash., to take on the Tacoma Stars on Saturday. The Fury return home to Toyota Arena at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 to take on Turlock Cal Express. Tickets for the game are on sale at the Toyota Arena box office or through the Ontario Fury's offices by calling 909-457-0252.
