Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

On Tuesday the Brandon Wheat Kings headed 20 minutes east of city limits to celebrate the winners of the Home Depot Backyard Rink contest, a local challenge to Wheat Kings fans to see who has the best homemade rink in the Westman area.

The Roux Family from Shilo, Manitoba - parents Kyle and Nicole and their children Oliver, Jordyn and Graeyson - were announced the winners of the contest last month, their backyard setup earning them a visit from the Wheat Kings for a game of shinny.

Goaltender Ethan Kruger, local Brandonite and right-winger, Lynden McCallum and defencemen Chad Nychuk and Jonny Lambos headed to Shilo in the late afternoon to go for a skate. Due to a bout of warm weather in Westman, the Roux family's rink was a little worse for wear and it was predicted that there would be a strong contingent of local children who would like to take part in the action, so the get-together moved just a couple hundred yards east of the Roux household to a larger, neighbouring community centre outdoor rink.

Kids from the age of approximately 3 to 10 joined in and a game of hockey broke out between everyone as the sun began to set before wrapping up with autograph signings, hot chocolate and doughnuts. Following the action at the community centre, the Wheat Kings dropped by the Roux residence to see the rink that brought the event out to Shilo to begin with.
