Frost Heaves to let fans pick coach
April 4, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Vermont Frost Heaves News Release
Cornwall, VT. As part of their mission to use the Internet to bring the New England town meeting to pro sports, the Vermont Frost Heaves are inviting their fans to choose the team's coach. Everyone enrolled in the Frost Heaves' on-line community, the Bump in the Road Club, as of 3pm Eastern time on Monday, April 10, will be eligible to vote. Fans who are not yet registered may do so at no cost by going to www.vermontfrostheaves.com/bumpintheroad. During the week of April 10, all Bump Club members will receive an email introducing the candidates and enabling each fan to cast a ballot. The team's new coach will be announced after the polls close, 48 hours later.
"Until now, pro sports teams have given their fans the chance to pick team nicknames and mascots," said Alexander Wolff, the Frost Heaves' president and founder. "We'll be offering ours the chance to make a much more consequential decision. We believe that any of the finalists would do a superb job of leading the team."
The Vermont Frost Heaves begin play in the ABA in November. The team will split its 18 home games between the Barre Municipal Auditorium and Burlington's Memorial Auditorium. Wolff, who lives in Cornwall, VT will chronicle the birth and life of the team in the pages of Sports Illustrated and on si.com. To get more information, sign up for tickets, purchase team gear, or join the Bump in the Road Club, go to www.vermontfrostheaves.com. Note: The deadline for registering to vote is indeed April 10, not April 17, as the "Frost Heaves Watch" column in this week's Sports Illustrated erroneously stated. Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
