Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, entering their 20th season in the American Hockey League, announced today that former Boston Bruin Don Sweeney will participate in the Alumni Game on November 13 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Sweeney, of St. Stephens, New Brunswick, was drafted by the Bruins with their eighth pick, 166th overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. A four-year product of Harvard University, Sweeney earned NCAA East All-American and ECAC First Team All-Star honors. Sweeney recorded 69 points in 124 games with the Crimson. The defenseman began his professional career in 1988 and split his first season between the Bruins and the Maine Mariners (AHL). Sweeney spent 15 of 16 of his professional seasons in a Bruins uniform. In 1,052 games with the Bruins, Sweeney tallied 52 goals and 210 assists for 262 points. Sweeney is one of just two defensemen and four players in team history to play over 1,000 games in a Bruins uniform. His 1,052 games in a Bruins sweater ranks third in the team's all-time games played, trailing only Johnny Bucyk and Ray Bourque.
After 15 seasons with Boston, Sweeney finished his professional career in 2003-04 with the Dallas Stars (NHL). In 1,115 professional games, the defenseman tallied 52 goals and added 221 helpers for 273 points. Sweeney rejoined the Bruins in 2007, becoming the team's Director of Player Development before being named to his current position as Assistant General Manager.
