Freedom Pitching Dominates Joliet

(Joliet, IL) - The Florence Freedom (33-37), presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, got terrific pitching from Patrick McGrath (1-1), Pete Levitt, Ethan Gibbons and Ed Kohout on their way to a 2-1 win over the Joliet Slammers (28-42) Friday night at Silver Cross Field.
McGrath got his first professional win as he went six and a third innings, scattering six hits, allowing only one run and striking out two. McGrath did not walk anyone.
Joliet did take the early lead as Nate Roberts scored on a Joe Staley RBI single in the first.
But the Freedom rallied in the fifth against Joliet starter Spencer Medick (0-2). Frazier Hall walked to lead-off the frame. One out later Andrew Godbold drew a walk as well. Then Ozzy Gonzalez recorded the first hit of the game for the Freedom, a single to load the bases.
With the bases loaded and one out, Zack Burling got hit by a pitch for his first professional RBI. Steve Carrillo got hit by a pitch as well to make it 2-1 in favor of the Freedom.
Florence's pitching took care of the rest as Levitt got the final two outs of the seventh, Ethan Gibbons did his thing in the eighth and Kohout picked up his 14th save of the year in the ninth.
Florence won the game despite only tallying two hits, both off the bat of Gonzalez. It's the third time they've beaten Joliet this year when getting out-hit by the Slammers. Florence is now 4-0 overall against Joliet in 2015.
The Freedom will look to win the series Saturday night as Zach Wendorf (0-1, 3.12 ERA) takes the hill for his first professional start. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. eastern time. Fans can tune in at http://mixlr.com/florencefreedom/.
