Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys are 13-17 on the 2003 season and are currently 6.0 games behind Carolina League Northern Division leader Lynchburg. The Keys took 3 out of 4 games from the Potomac Cannons at Woodbridge, VA on May 1 through the 4. The Keys won the first game, 5-2, and shutout the Cannons in the second game, 4-0, before falling in the third game 7-3. In the fourth game, the Keys rallied from two down in the final inning to send the game into extra innings where they eventually won the game, 9-8. After being rained out in the first game of their four-game series with Kinston, the Keys took 3 out of 4 from the K-Tribe to win 2 series in a row for the first time this season. On Tuesday, May 6, the Keys split a doubleheader with the Indians, losing the first game, 10-1, while winning the second game, 4-3, on a passed ball in the final inning. The next day, the Keys swept the Indians in a doubleheader, winning the first game, 6-4, and shutting out the Indians in the second game, 1-0. The Keys begin an eight-game road trip today, playing 4 games against the Lynchburg Hillcats in Lynchburg, VA and then going to Salem, VA for 4 games against the Salem Avalanche.
Roster Update
A number of roster moves have taken place during the past week. First baseman/designated hitter Randy Ruiz was transferred to Class A Delmarva and in his place, designated hitter Patrick O'Sullivan was brought up from the Shorebirds. On May 4, right-handed pitcher Kenny Sims was promoted to Class AA Bowie and right-handed pitcher Martin Berube joined the Keys to take Sims' place. The next day, right-handed relief pitcher Tim Corcoran joined Sims by being promoted to Bowie. Right-handed pitcher Fredy Deza was assigned to Frederick from extended spring training. On May 7, catcher Henry Guerrero was recalled from extended spring training to take the place of catcher Mike Seestedt, who was transferred to Class AAA Ottawa. And finally, Deza was sent back to extended spring training and left-handed pitcher Brad Edwards was transferred to Class A Frederick from Class A Delmarva.
Huggy Bear
First baseman Mike Huggins has been extremely hot recently, raising his batting average to .346. Huggins is batting .588 over the last 5 games and has 10 hits in his last 17 at bats. In Wednesday's 6-4 victory over Kinston in the first game of a doubleheader, he hit a two-run home run, his second home run of the season. In his last 10 games, Huggins is batting .531 with 17 hits in 32 at-bats. He has batted in 10 runners during this recent hot streak and currently leads the team with 19 RBI. In addition, Huggins has moved into fourth place in the Carolina League with 36 total hits on the season.
Woody's Roundup
Center fielder Woody Cliffords hit his fourth home run of the season on May 4 in a 9-8 victory at Potomac. Cliffords currently leads the Keys in with his four home runs. He is tied for 5th in the Carolina League for total home runs on the season.
No Chance To Score
Left-handed pitcher Anthony Boughner has gone the last 7 innings without giving up a run, the longest such streak for a Keys pitcher this season. In his last appearance, Boughner made his first start of the season in the second game of a doubleheader against Kinston on May 7, lasting 4.0 innings and only giving up 2 hits while striking out 3 in a game the Keys would eventually win, 1-0.
The Rleal Deal
Right-handed reliever Sendy Rleal continues to shut down opposing teams, notching two saves in his last 3 appearances. Rleal leads the Keys with 5 saves on the season and is currently tied for second in the Carolina League in saves. Rleal has pitched 3.0 innings over his last 3 appearances, giving up only 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 3. For the season, Rleal is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA.
League Leaders
The Keys currently have two players in the Carolina League Top 10 Batting list. First baseman Mike Huggins has been on a tear recently and moved up to second on the list. Joining Huggins on the top ten list is left fielder Gary Cates. Cates is batting .319 and is 9th on the list. Cates has played in 25 games and has 29 hits and 8 RBI on the season.
